Product Description We've all heard the rationale: "It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you're sincere." Or "All religions are pretty much the same." But are they the same? Does it matter which one you follow? In this insightful and compelling book, Michael Green invites readers into a relationship with Jesus Christ, the divine revelation and only pathway to the one true God. In a conversational style geared toward nonbelievers, Green compares Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and other religions to help spiritual seekers navigate the multi-faith maze. "But Don't All Religions Lead to God?" is an ideal reference and evangelism tool for churches and individual Christians as well. It offers scriptural references, looks at how divergent religious traditions view salvation and eternity, and answers difficult questions such as "What about people who have never heard of Jesus?" and "How should Christians regard other religions?" In the midst of our pluralistic and tolerant culture, here is an important and convincing argument for faith in Jesus-the only great teacher whose death and resurrection provided grace, forgiveness, and an eternity in the presence of God. About the Author Michael Green is a senior research fellow at Wycliffe Hall, a college within Oxford University in England. He is also an evangelist, a Bible teacher, and the author of more than sixty books, including The Message of Matthew and Asian Tigers for Christ. Green was formerly on staff at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His biography has recently been published in the UK by HarperCollins.

About the Author Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 1834 - 1892 Charles Spurgeon was born in Kelvedon, Essex in June 19, 1834. His father and his grandfather were both pastors and at the age of twenty, he became the pastor of the famous New Park Street Church in London. The congregation quickly grew out of the building and moved to Exeter Hall where he frequently preached to audiences of over 10,000 people. In 1861, the congregation moved to newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle, which was the largest indoor congregation ever reached with human voice up to that time in history. The Tabernacle was able to accommodate up to 6,000 people. The New Park Street and the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpits, where Spurgeon preached, collected his sermons during his ministry, and they filled 63 volumes with 20-25 million words in them. His series stands as the largest set of books by a single author in the history of Christianity. His own personal library contained over 12,000 volumes. Spurgeon also became known to a wider audience with the publication of "Ploughman's Talk" in 1869 and "The Treasury of David." During Spurgeon's last years, he suffered severe physical pain from a gout attack. He was growing increasing ill and on January 31, 1892, Charles Haddon Spurgeon died.

Abraham's Four Seeds

Paperback New Covenant Media
Product Description Abraham's Four Seeds is a biblical examination of the presuppositions of Covenant Theology and Dispensationalism. Pastor, evangelist, and author John G. Reisinger demonstrates how a correct understanding of Abraham's seeds is key to harmonizing Scripture. He writes: The following statement, if correctly understood, will help to clear up a lot of confusion: The nation of Israel was not the 'Body of Christ,' even though the Body of Christ is indeed the true 'Israel of God.' Covenant Theology cannot accept the first part of that statement and Dispensationalism cannot accept the second part. The basic presuppositions of Covenant Theology make it mandatory that Israel be the church and be under the same covenant as the church, and the one thing a Dispensationalist must maintain is the church's present and future distinction from Israel which makes it mandatory that Israel and the church can never be under the same covenant or inherit the same blessings. What is essential to one system is anathema to the other system. Dispensationalism cannot get Israel and the church together in any sense whatever, and Covenant Theology cannot get them apart. Dispensationalism cannot see that the church is the true Israel of God and the fulfillment of the promises that God made to Abraham and the fathers, and Covenant Theology cannot see that the church, as the Body of Christ, did not, and simply could not, exist in reality and experience until the personal advent of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. Dispensationalism insists that Israel and the church have totally different promises and destinies (one earthly and the other heavenly), and Covenant Theology insists that Israel and the Body of Christ are equally the "same redeemed church under the same 'covenant of grace' and governed by the same identical 'canon of conduct.'" Dispensationalism drives a wedge between the OT and the NT and never the twain shall meet as specific promise (OT) and identical fulfillment (NT); and Covenant Theology flattens the whole Bible out into one covenant where there is no real and vital distinction between either the Old and New Covenants or Israel and the church. The Old Covenant proved one's guilt and forbade one to draw near without a perfect righteousness or an acceptable sacrifice. The New Covenant declares a believer to be both righteous and acceptable in God's sight, and it bids him come boldly without fear into the very Most Holy place that was totally closed off to all but Aaron under the Old Covenant. The law as a legal covenant ended when the veil of the temple was rent from top to bottom, and the law as a pedagogue over the conscience was dismissed on the day of Pentecost when the 'promise of the Father' took up his abode in every believer as the personal Vicar of the ascended Lord. The giving of the Spirit is the proof of the accepted work of Christ in the heavenly tabernacle, and the 'given Spirit' indwelling the believer is the indelible assurance of our eternal acceptance by the Father. It is the author's desire that this book would be of benefit to those who desire to understand "What does the Scripture say?" May the watchword Sola Scriptura have real meaning in the church! About the Author John G. Reisinger is a noted evangelist, author, and teacher of the Word of God. He has been in the ministry for over fifty years. John's unique gift is the ability to take what may be difficult truths and to present them in an easily understandable manner.

Editorial Reviews Product Description In this provocative book, Franky Schaeffer shows how Christians today have sacrificed the artistic prominence they enjoyed for centuries and settled instead for mediocrity. The evidence for this sad state of affairs abounds. We are flooded with "Christian" doodads, trinkets, t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc., that use God's name as an advertising slogan--"Things Go Better with Jesus"--putting the Creator of the universe on the same level as soda pop! Moreover, Schaeffer writes, "Whenever Christians, and evangelicals in particular, have attempted to 'reach the world' through the media--TV, film, publishing and so on--the thinking public gets the firm idea that, like soup in a bad restaurant, Christians' brains are best left unstirred." But it doesn't have to be this way. Schaeffer shows how Christians who care can begin to reverse the slide toward mediocrity: by demanding excellence in the arts and media, and in all areas of life; by giving our time, talents and money to those things which are worthy of our support and are truly honoring to God; by staying away from the cheap, the shoddy, and the make-a-fast-buck mentality. Schaeffer offers not only an unflinching critique, but specific and practical direction for becoming "unaddicted," and for recovering artistic excellence. The punch, humor and satire of the text is effectively enhanced by nineteen original drawings by Chicago artist Kurt Mitchell.

Product Description A worship disorder: this is how Edward T. Welch views addictions. "Will we worship our own desires or will we worship the true God?" With this lens the author discovers far more in Scripture on addictions than passages on drunkenness. There we learn the addict's true condition: like guests at a banquet thrown by "the woman Folly," he is already in the grave (Proverbs 9:13-18). Can we not escape our addictions? If we're willing to follow Jesus, the author says that we have "immense hope: hope in God's forgiving grace, hope in God's love that is faithful even when we are not, and hope that God can give power so that we are no longer mastered by the addiction." Each chapter concludes with "Practical Theology," "As Your Face Your Own Addictions," and "As You Help Someone Else." From the Publisher A book on addictions written by a leader of the biblical counseling movement, informed by the author's wide experience in counseling people with addictions.

Hardcover Oxford University Press, USA
Review "[Ehrman's] collection presents a broad range of primary texts from the early years of Christianity, with as full a set of texts as possible within the restrictions of providing these works in a single volume. The texts deal with a range of significant issues within early Christianity, such as evangelism, persecution and martyrdom, apologetics, heresies, apocrypha/pseudepigrapha, church offices, liturgics and ethics, arranged according to the topics themselves rather than according to the categories of systematic theology....Ehrman has sought to include large selections: complete texts when possible, and lengthy excerpts when not....In spite of having most of these texts in various editions I found myself excitedly looking through the selections for the intelligent topical arrangement, and looking forward to using this as a required textbook...." [this review takes up 2 fields; see below for conclusion] "Each chapter begins with a sketch of the important historical aspects of the topic, and each individual text is introduced with brief comments concerning its historical context and significance. The topical introduction of each chapter is not a brief and passing mention, but rather an in-depth essay to the stated topic, with a brief bibliography before the primary text on good current titles for further reading. This reader is a welcome and needed addition to the increasing titles available on early Christianity, especially since it is not an anthology of secondary scholarly opinion on the history of early Christianity, but provides the opportunity for students to become immersed in the primary sources themselves."--John Voelker, Marquette University, in the Journal of Early Christian Studies "An outstanding collection of relevant primary sources for courses on the history of early Christianity. Students found the texts exciting, readable (because of the modern translation), and informative. They also appreciated the helpful introductions to each section."--William Tabbernee, Phillips Theological Seminary "Finally! Just what I have been looking for: a judiciously selected anthology with appropriate-length early texts."--Stephen Healey, University of Bridgeport "A wonderful text. It is a comprehensive and provocative collection of early Christian writings sufficient to induce even the most sleepy-headed reader to ask questions. Those who teach Christian history should welcome this anthology."--Lawrence Snyder, Western Kentucky University "An excellent Ante-Nicean primary source reader. The thematic approach is well thought out. A very useful text for a class on Christian origins."--Gaston Espinosa, Westmont College "Ehrman's shrewd chapter topics, along with his brief (but pithy) introductions enable good use of these 2nd and 3rd century texts which together well represent the breadth and variety of Christian beginnings. We now have a fresh and student-friendly set of resources for examination of early Christian literature 'after the New Testament.'"--Bob Gregg, Stanford University "This is a splendid anthology that should replace several others that have been in use during the past decades. It should be of tremendous benefit to teachers and students of the New Testament and Early Christianity."--Elizabeth A. Clark, Duke University "This volume will be invaluable to teachers of early Christian history who have lacked such a broad-ranging collection of key texts. It is likely to be sufficient in itself for a college or seminary introduction to early church history. Ehrman's selection of texts and of passages to excerpt is judicious, covering a wonderfully vast territory of topics with depth sufficient both to map central issues and to allow students to explore more obscure regions."--Derek Krueger,The University of North Carolina, Greensboro "This is a tremendous anthology of early church writings--will be of better value to my church history class than previous anthologies."--Merrill Hawking, Carson Newman College --This text refers to the Paperback edition. Paperback Master Books
Product Description When actor Richard Dreyfus gazed up into the heavens during the hit film, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," audiences looked with him, in rapt attention. "Alien" encounters cropped up like, well, crop circles. More films were released. Books detailed alleged "abductions." NASA funded SETI, an effort to make contact with civilizations from other worlds. But is all this valid? Are there really alien civilizations in our vast universe? In Alien Intrusion, Gary Bates gives a thorough treatment of this fascinating subject. What is behind the numerous sightings from around the world? Does the U.S. Government have evidence of alien craft? Can we hope to mkae contact in our lifetime? The author comes from an unapologetic Christian perspective, but lets the facts speak for themselves. His expertise on the subject and ability to 'cover the bases' has earned widespread respect - even from many in the 'UFOlogy community' who may be uncomfortable with the startling conclusions to which he inevitable leads the reader. This was especially evident during an amazing three-hour interview with George Noory on Coast to Coast. This invaluable book will help Christians understand the issues, and be able to intelligently answer questions and engage in dialogue with a culture sure were are being watched from space. Heavily illustrated with photographs and drawings - an amazingly comprehensive 'cutting-edge' look at the UFO abduction phenomena. About the Author As a lifelong fan of sci-fi, Gary Bates' extensive background in marketing and communication have positioned him well to present in a fast-paved, gripping read the findings of his specialist research into UFO phenomenon and associated extra-terrestrial beliefs. Unlike many UFO researchers, he avoids the 'one-size-fits-all' explanation. But in his research, along with uncovering many bizarre claims (and debunking some), leads the reader on a fascinating exploration of myth, mystery, and questions of who we are, how we came to be - and are we alone in this great big universe. A convert to Christianity, Gary recognizes the way in which UFO beliefs are rapidly escalating in society and the church, challenging the foundations of many faiths. For many years, Gary has been speaking to church audiences on science topics, including creation/evolution. He is currently the head of the ministry development department of what is possibly Australia's largest parachurch organization, one that has spawned sister offices in five other countries.

From Booklist Rivers' And the Shofar Blew is about a young minister, Paul Hudson, who takes on a small, perhaps even a dying, church in central California. Paul is hardworking and ambitious, but his ambition soon overcomes the real purpose of his work, so that questionable means begin to seem justified for his laudable aims. In the mix also are Eunice, his wife, and a newly converted, reformed alcoholic named Stephen Decker, who designs Paul's brand-new church. Rivers seems to grow more moralistic with each book but as usual turns in a strong narrative, posing issues that ring loud and clear if only within church circles. Paperback Bethany House Publishers
From Publishers Weekly In this first book in the Shenandoah Sisters series, Phillips, a prolific author and longtime CBA bookseller, offers a light historical novel with the flavor of young adult fiction. Mary Ann "Mayme" Jukes is a young African-American slave girl living in Shenandoah County, in North Carolina, in the 1860s. When marauding outlaw Confederate soldiers kill her family, she escapes to Rosewood, another plantation owned by the white family of Kathleen "Katie" Clairborne. Here, Mayme finds more devastation; 15-year-old Katie is the only person left alive. The girls become friends and together vow to run the plantation and keep the adults' deaths a secret until Katie comes of legal age to own the debt-ridden property. The book is mostly a collection of short, sketchy scenes, presumably setting up events for the next book in the series. Phillips's prose is simple and workmanlike, adeptly moving the events along. The reader is left with a few questions (the plantation is devastated, yet the girls have plenty of livestock and groceries), and the spiritual thread is fairly basic (God tells Mayme directly what to do, and they speak to each other in italics). The epilogue leaves the reader hanging until the promised second installment. Young evangelical Christian women looking for escapist historical fiction will find this passable, if not particularly memorable, entertainment. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Product Description Book 1 of SHENANDOAH SISTERS. Two young Southern girls, one the daughter of a plantation owner and one the daughter of a slave, barely survive the onset of the Civil War and the loss of both their families. When these tragic circumstances bring them together, they join forces to discover if they can make a life for themselves. As their preconceptions give way to experience, they gradually learn to value their contrasting and complementing strengths and skills as they face the formidable task of keeping body and soul together in the aftermath of this devastating war. But is it possible the Lord they have come to know has something bigger in mind for the plantation than either of them can imagine?

Product Description Anne Boleyn, twenty years old, stepped onto the shore at Dover in the winter of 1521 after several years abroad. She had been sent to France to assimilate French culture, and had used the time well. She was all set to make a big impression at the Tudor courtand did, capturing the heart of Henry VIII. But this woman, who was in the grave by the age of thirtysix and on the throne of England for only three years, provokes strong reactions from many. Was she an immoral woman who seduced Henry away from his rightful wife for the advancement of family and personal gain? In this wellresearched, fresh look at Anne, Colin Hamer sets her in her context as a young woman who had come to true faith in Christ, and shows the impact for good she made from her position of influence, an impact we still benefit from today. About the Author Colin Hamer is currently chairman of a charity that works with the homeless and other vulnerable groups. Product Description Andrew Fuller was a man whose active life was devoted to the work of God. His paramount desire was to be true to the Scriptures. Fuller had a deep concern for sinners and was untiring in his evangelistic endeavours and support of missions. In The Armies of the Lamb Fuller's rich spiritual life is seen first-hand through a selection of his letters, some never before published. Editor Michael Haykin presents Fuller to a twenty-first century audience with a freshness that encourages personal spiritual renewal - something Fuller so longed for in his time. Spirituality means knowing the Word of God, understanding the work of the Spirit of God, and focusing on the necessity, infinite glory, and sufficiency of the cross of Christ. From the Publisher [Fuller] disarms and alarms us with his candour, and existential accuracy, in describing his sense of having destroyed his usefulness; but we find it strangely refreshing and encouraging because we have been there ourselves. This kind of edifying honesty that urges us on in the work of believing in Christ is the best kind of spirituality. - from the Foreword by Tom J. Nettles, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kentucky. * Illustrations * Photographs

A truly beautiful book about God's grace.” —J.G., Amazon reader $lt;p> “This is an awesome book which shows the Power of God's forgiveness and love in the midst of pain. Editorial Reviews Product Description The foundation of our knowledge of God rests upon knowing what he is like. Without understanding God's attributes, we have a skewed perception of him--often one cast in our own image. We need more than just a theoretical knowledge of God in order to worship him as he desires. This classic work of Arthur W. Pink invites readers to discover the truth about seventeen attributes of God, including his sovereignty, immutability, patience, love, faithfulness, and much more. Pink shows readers a God who is alive, all-powerful, and active in his creation. The perfect introductory text, The Attributes of God also has enough depth and meat to satisfy the more experienced reader. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition. From the Back Cover A Transforming Knowledge of the Living God The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Pink's book explores attributes such as God's decrees, foreknowledge, sovereignty, holiness, grace, and mercy, among many others, all packaged in a style especially useful for pastors, teachers, and Bible students. Our God who is above all names cannot be found through human searching alone, Pink teaches, but can be known only as he is revealed by the Holy Spirit through his living Word. Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) served as a pastor for churches in Colorado, California, Kentucky, and South Carolina. His ministry brought him throughout the United States, Australia, and Great Britain. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description "In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own eyes." Judges 21:25 Centuries have come and gone since those words of Scripture were written, but our self-centered, pleasure-minded human race has never seemed to learn the lessons of history. Philosopher George Santayana was right when he said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Today's world and the world of the Judges are similar in many ways. Greed. Sexual immorality. Disregard for moral absolutes. Even God's people can't seem to work together. But Warren Wiersbe reminds us through this study that here and there God is raising up men and women who believe Him, confront the enemy, and win the victory. The challenge of the Book of Judges is: be available! No matter how dark the day, God can still work through people who will trust His word, yield to His spirit, and do His bidding. Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe is best known as an author, pastor, and radio Bible teacher. He was for seven years pastor of Chicago's Moody Memorial Church and most recently served as General Director and Bible teacher for Back to the Bible. He has authored over 100 books, including the New Testament and Old Testament "BE" series and Wiersbe's Expository Outlines. About the Author Dr. Warren W. Can we break out?The vanity of wisdom . . . Who can explain life's inconsistencies? The futility of wealth . . . Why doesn't money solve our problems? The certainty of death . . . Why not "eat, drink, and be merry?" Solomon struggled with these crucial questions and came up with the right answers. Ecclesiastes is an inspired road map that guides you through the puzzles and problems of living and shows you the source by which you too may Be Satisfied. About the Author Dr. Warren W. Thrust into leadership when Moses died, Joshua took to heart God's instructions about the keys to victory. Putting fear aside and realizing the Lord was his true source of strength, Joshua became God's instrument for bringing the Israelites safely into the Promised Land. Amazon.com Review Philip Yancey, editor at large and columnist for Christianity Today, follows up his back-to-back bestselling books, What's So Amazing About Grace and The Jesus I Never Knew, with The Bible Jesus Read, an exploration of the significance of the Old Testament to today's Christian. Given previous book titles--Where Is God When It Hurts, Disappointment with God, and The Gift of Pain--one might jokingly suggest that in the Old Testament Yancey has found his true home. He acknowledges that in studying key sections of the Hebrew Bible (he concentrates on Job, Deuteronomy, The Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets) he found himself confronted by the core questions that haunt his Christian faith: Do I matter? Does God care? Why doesn't God act? As always, Yancey explores these central human questions with a style that is marked by directness, humor, and honesty. He writes not as theologian or mystic but as a questioning seeker. Rather than providing simple answers--he in fact says that "by no means did Jesus resolve the problem of pain"--he instead affirms the words of Thomas Merton, which he quotes in his Introduction: "There is ... nothing comfortable about the Bible--until we manage to get so used to it that we make it comfortable for ourselves." Even as he finds the Old Testament a "companion for my pilgrimage," so is Yancey a companion for his readers, precisely through his willingness to ask --and his courage not to answer--all the hard questions. --Doug Thorpe From Publishers Weekly Yancey is an astute author who challenges Christians' assumptions without alienating them. In The Bible Jesus Read, Yancey encourages readers to consider how Hebrew ScriptureAwhat Christians call the Old TestamentAis relevant to their own lives. His premise is that although many Christians tacitly consider the New Testament more important than the Old, the New Testament was written after Jesus' earthly ministry, making the Old Testament "the Bible Jesus read." Hebrew Scripture was the greatest influence on the mind and spirit of the founder of Christianity, a fact that, in the author's estimation, obligates Christians to know it well. Yancey acknowledges the difficulty of transcending the cultural gulf between modern civilization and ancient Israel and seeks to bridge the gap by highlighting sections of the Old Testament that he initially found hard to appreciate. The writings of the Prophets were particularly obscure to Yancey because of the nonnarrative style and assumption of a warrior culture. However, he gradually discovered the passages' deep relevance to, and resonance with, his own experience. He came to love these Old Testament books when he realized that many of their concerns, such as justice for the poor and faithfulness to God, are timeless. Yancey's lucid style and honest handling of difficult ideas ensure that readers who have enjoyed his earlier books will not be disappointed in this one. (Sept.) Amazon.com Review Say you're curious about the Bible's stance on alcohol. All you need to do open to page 41 of Stephen J. Lang's Biblical Quotations for All Occasions, where you'll find Proverbs 23:20-21, which says, "Be not among wine guzzlers, nor among gluttonous eaters of food. For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and laziness shall clothe a man with rags." Or Proverbs 31:6-7: "Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those that are of heavy hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more," arming you with the appropriate Gospel for whichever side of the argument you wish to espouse. The book includes quotations for various occasions--"Anniversaries" to "Weddings"--and quotations by subject, organized alphabetically from "Abuse" and "Adultery" to "Work," "Worldly Pleasures," and "Worry." Each category mentions others that are related, so "Conflict" refers you to "Fellowship with Other Believers," "Hate," and "Peace." I Peter 5:8 advises: "Be self-controlled, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour," but self-control isn't so easy with Lang's Biblical Quotations nearby. --Stephanie Gold Review The Bible's Most Memorable Sayings at Your Fingertips -- Review

You can read about Miriam and Moses in the book of Exodus. About the Author How can a basin of water help you write your first book? Carine Mackenzie wrote her first book, Gideon Soldier of God, in the kitchen of her home in Inverness, Scotland. A two year old was at her feet playing blissfully with a basin of water. "It was the only way I could be sure of getting some peace and quiet ... and it worked." The two year old is now married with a family of her own and Carine's first attempt at writing has grown too. Her talent for retelling Bible stories has meant that children from all over the world have been given the opportunity to discover Jesus Christ for themselves. The first title written in the kitchen with the assistance of a basin of water has inspired the production of many other books. His story has brought hope, encouragement, and inspiration to the many thousands who have read it. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From the Back Cover Twenty years ago, against the backdrop of the explosive Watergate scandal, Charles Colson revealed the story of his own search for meaning during the tumultuous investigations that led to the collapse of the Nixon administration. A convicted former special counsel to the president, Colson paradoxically found new life not with success and power, but while in national disgrace and serving a prison sentence. In the new foreword for this anniversary edition of Born Again, Colson describes the day he sat in his prison cell and began jotting down notes of the events that brought about the fall of a president and the rebirth of his former "hatchet man." Those notes developed into this book, which has sold more than two million copies. "All I knew was that I had a story I must tell, a story that might bring hope and encouragement to others," Colson recalls. In a new epilogue, he describes some of the ways the story has indeed brought hope, encouragement, and more. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Editorial Reviews Product Description Sin has ravaged the house that God created. This world sits slumped, disheveled, and in pain, groaning for the restoration that can only be accomplished by the hands of him who built it in the first place. The bad news is that you and I are living right in the middle of the restoration process. The good news is that the divine Builder will not relent until everything about his house is made totally new again. Emmanuel lives here with us, and he is at work returning his house to its former beauty. Someday you will live forever in a fully restored house, but right now you are called to live with peace, joy, and productivity in a place damaged by sin. How can you be an active part of the restoration at the heart of God s plan? The book in your hands will teach you to live productively in the here and now. About the Author Paul is on the pastoral staff of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia where he preaches on Sunday evenings and leads the Ministry to Center City. He is also an international conference speaker. As a teacher, Paul has served many respected institutions including Westminster Theological Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Paul is the founder of a Christian school, and has been a counselor for many years. He is married to Luella and they have four grown children. Discerning Reader Editorial Review Reviewed 07/13/2009 by Mark Tubbs. Recommended. Using a broken-down house as a metaphor, Tripp conveys the good news that in spite of the shambles it's in, Emmanuel still lives there. Using the concept of the house as a metaphor for life isn't a novel idea. In Scripture, both the psalmist and Christ himself employ the metaphor. More recently, author William Paul Young situated the majority of the action of The Shack in a ramshackle structure in which the Trinity helps the main character to process the tragic events of his life. Even the secular world has employed the metaphor, such as in the 2001 film Life as a House. Paul David Tripp, whom I readily disclose as one of my favorite Christian authors alongside John Piper, puts the Christian-life-as-a-house metaphor to effective service in his newest book, Broken-Down House: Living Productively in a World Gone Bad. Special mention ought also to go to editor Kevin Meath, who strengthened the manuscript for publication. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but the way in which Tripp opens the penultimate chapter is instructive regarding the nature of his book: Tim had his life organized into neat little categories—work, family, church, friendships, leisure—and he was careful to give proper attention to each one. Similarly, whereas many Christian books focus in on a single aspect of the Christian life as though it were a separate compartment, Broken-Down House is comprehensive in its scope. A biblical theology of the Christian life, if you like. I cannot do better than to quote Tripp sketching out the architecture of this book: Well, sin has ravaged the beautiful house that God created. This world bears only the faintest resemblance to what it was built to be. It sits in slumped and disheveled pain, groaning for the restoration that can only be accomplished by the hands of him who built it in the first place. The Bible clearly tells us that the divine Builder cannot and will not leave his house in its present pitiful condition. He has instituted a plan of restoration, and he will not relent until everything about His house is made totally new again. That is the good news. The bad news is that you and I are a living right in the middle of the restoration. We live each day in a house that is terribly broken, where nothing works exactly as intended. But we do not live in the house by ourselves. Emmanuel lives here as well, and he is at work returning his house to its former beauty. Often it doesn’t look like any real restoration is going on at all. Things seem to get messier, uglier, and less functional all the time. But that’s the way it is with restoration; things generally get worse before th

The meaning of this phrase as he used it in Matthew 5 is the subject of disagreement among many sincere Christians. Evangelical theologians generally adopt one of two possible interpretations: One, Christ is contrasting his teaching with Moses' teaching; or two, Christ is giving the true meaning of Moses and contrasting that with the distortions of Moses by the Pharisees. Which of these positions is correct? The answer we accept directly affects our entire system of theology. This is no ivory tower debate among academics far removed from the life of the church and individual Christians. Its crucial point addresses the identity and content of the final authority over the Christian's conscience in matters of morality. The thesis of this book is one of the foundation stones of a theological position called New Covenant Theology. We believe that our Lord is more than a scribe or rabbi who merely interprets Moses; he is a true prophet. He is "that Prophet," promised as the new lawgiver who would replace Moses (Deut. 18:15-19). In the Sermon on the Mount, the new lawgiver contrasts his teaching, based on the gracious covenant he established, with the teaching of Moses, based on a covenant of law. As believers living under the New Covenant, we must look to Jesus Christ as the final revelation of God's character and will, and allow him alone to set the standards that mark the life of the people of God. We must take seriously the Father's message, "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him" (Mark 9:7). --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description Carson's clarion call to a failing church is that Paul's prayer life must transform Christians if they are to know release from the superficial. Carson calls leaders to turn from focusing on frenetic activity and meaningless emotion and instead teach their people to intimately know God and His power. From the Back Cover God doesn't demand hectic church programs and frenetic schedules; he only wants his people to know him more intimately, says D. A. Carson. The apostle Paul found that spiritual closeness in his own fellowship with the Father. A Call to Spiritual Reformation investigates the Epistles to see what lessons Paul taught in his "school of prayer." Christians today can still achieve the confidence Paul enjoyed by following his life-shaping principles and searching for a deeper devotional experience. "[This book] provides a . . . pointed argument that the greatest need for churches today is not education, evangelism, or programs, but a deeper knowledge of God. It contributes to filling that need by assisting those who read it to a fuller life of prayer." Review and Expositor "The reader is guided, gently yet persuasively, towards a reformation in personal dealings with God. This excellent and timely book can be heartily commended." The Banner of Truth D. A. Carson is professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois. He is the author of How Long, O Lord? and editor of Teach Us to Pray and Right with God.

Paperback Zondervan
Amazon.com Review Are Christianity and science incompatible? If there is a God, is he only an impersonal starter force? An introductory high school biology class first propelled Lee Strobel toward a life of atheism. God and science, he reasoned, were mutually exclusive. When the former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune converted to Christianity, he decided to investigate the science he had once accepted as truth. Did science point toward or away from God? As Strobel interviews a variety of scientists on everything from debunking evolutionary icons to the implications of the Big Bang to the existence of the human soul, he builds his case: scientific evidence points toward Intelligent Design. Although the discussion often veers into the academic, Strobel works hard to make it accessible to those without scientific training. Throughout the book, he salts interview transcript information with interesting personal stories of his own spiritual and scientific quest for knowledge, as well as sometimes over-detailed descriptions of the actual interviews (right down to the type of beverages consumed). Each chapter contains suggestions for further reading on particular issues of science and faith. Strobel concludes that, when correctly interpreted, science and biblical teaching support each other. He quotes physicist Paul Davies, "...science offers a surer path to God than religion." Open-minded readers will find that this book, and its questions for reflection and group study, invites conversation and investigation.--Cindy Crosby --This text refers to the Paperback edition. From Publishers Weekly Strobel, whose apologetics titles The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith have enjoyed strong popularity among evangelicals, approaches creation/evolution issues in the same simple and energetic style. The format will be familiar to readers of previous Case books: Strobel visits with scholars and researchers and works each interview into a topical outline. Although Strobel does not interview any "hostile" witnesses, he exposes readers to the work of some major origins researchers (including Jonathan Wells, Stephen Meyer and Michael Behe) and theistic philosophers (including William Lane Craig and J. P. Moreland). Strobel claims no expertise in science or metaphysics, but as an interviewer he makes this an asset, prodding his sources to translate jargon and provide illustrations for their arguments. At times, the interview format loses momentum as seams begin to show between interview recordings, rewrites, research notes and details imported from his subjects' CVs (here, Strobel's efforts at buffing his subjects' smart-guy credentials can become a little too intense). The most curious feature of the book-not uncommon in the origins literature but unusual in a work of Christian apologetics-is that biblical narratives and images of creation, and the significance of creation for Christian theology, receive such brief mention. Still, this solid introduction to the most important topics in origins debates is highly accessible and packs a good argumentative punch. From the Back Cover Be inspired by a woman who dared to follow God Amy Carmichael understood true discipleship and lived it out. At a very young age she felt called to the mission field, followed God's guidance, and eventually went to India, where she would spend fifty-three years without furlough. While there, Amy founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, a refuge for children in moral danger-children who were orphaned or unwanted and sold to the temple. Amy became a mother for these children, and so they called her "Amma." Even today, Amy's life of obedience and courage stands as a model for all Christians everywhere. We resonate with her desires and dreams, her faults and fears, her dedication and service. For former missionary and author Elisabeth Elliot, Amy became a role model. "She was my first spiritual mother," writes Elliot. "She showed me the shape of godliness." A Chance to Die is the life story of Amy Carmichael. In this reverent biography, Elisabeth Elliot brings "Amma" to life, providing a compelling, unforgettable narrative that will provoke you to examine the depths of your own faith and encourage you to reaffirm your life and commitment to Christ. Elisabeth Elliot, one of the outstanding women of present-day Christianity, is the author of more than twenty books, including Passion and Purity, The Journals of Jim Elliot, and These Strange Ashes. Christ and Culture Revisited

Hardcover Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company
Product Description Called to live in the world, but not to be of it, Christians must maintain a balancing act that becomes more precarious the further our culture departs from its Judeo-Christian roots. How should members of the church interact with such a culture, especially as deeply enmeshed as most of us have become? D. A. Carson applies his masterful touch to this problem. He begins by exploring the classic typology of H. Richard Niebuhr and his five options for understanding culture. Carson proposes that these disparate options are in reality one still larger vision. Using the Bible's own story line and the categories of biblical theology, he attempts to work out what that unifying vision is. Carson acknowledges the helpfulness of Niebuhr's grid and other similar matrices but warns against giving them canonical force. More than just theoretical, Christ and Culture Revisited is also designed practically to help Christians untangle current messy debates on living in the world. Carson emphasizes that the relation between Christ and culture is not limited to an either/or cultural paradigm -- Christ against culture or Christ transforming culture. Instead Carson offers his own paradigm in which all the categories of biblical theology must be kept in mind simultaneously to inform the Christian worldview. Though several other books on culture interact with Niebuhr, none of them takes anything like the biblical-theological approach adopted here. Ground-breaking and challenging, Christ and Culture Revisited is a tour de force. About the Author D. A. Carson is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois. He has written nearly fifty other books, including The Gagging of God: Christianity Confronts Pluralism and How Long, O Lord? Reflections on Suffering and Evil.

Editorial Reviews Product Description When he entered the Manila squatter settlement of Tatalon in 1979, Grigg knew what he wanted to do but not how to do it. The need was obvious-—to establish a Christian church among Asia's forgotten people, the impoverished slum dwellers of its vast megalopolises. The challenge was to find a way that did not treat people's spiritual needs in isolation from their poverty, without simply becoming another economic or social relief program with no evangelistic component. This book is the enthralling story of how the author met and solved this problem. But in a sense, it is an unfinished story. What has begun is but the beginning of the founding of a Christian community in a dark place. This is not Viv Grigg's story alone, but God's story. For it is God who is working in Tatalon and urban slums like it, and giving people a hope that affects all of life. --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Product Description "Follows the format of the popular Women's and Men's Devotional Bibles. The complete text of the NIV. Self-evaluation and quizzes. Subject index. AUTHOR biographies with info on each contributor." From the Publisher An estimated 50% of marriages in America end in divorce. That's not surprising, considering that a recent university study showed that the average married couple spends only about six minutes per week in serious discussion. The job, the newspaper, the television, and the telephone take time away from couples who need time to talk. The NIV Couples' Devotional Bible, written in conjunction with Marriage Partnership magazine and more than 140 writers, intends to help couples improve communication and bring the principles of scripture into the marriage relationship. AUTHORs like Stephen Arterburn, Charles Colson, Charles Swindoll, and Joni Eareckson Tada give couples their personal insights (via daily Marriage Builder devotionals) on the ingredients of a healthy, Christ-centered marriage. The Weekending devotionals pose pressing questions spouses can ask of themselves and each other. The topics are as broad and as important as marriage itself. Communication. Work. Sex. In-laws. Decision-making. Money. Spiritual growth. Friends. Fun. Not only does the Couples' Devotional Bible bring mates closer to each other, it also draws them closer to God.

Editorial Reviews From Library Journal Conceived originally for the Gheens Lectures at Louisville's Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, these essays affirm traditional views on the atonement but venture beyond them to explore other aspects that speak especially to today's societyhow the cross helps overcome futility and transcend ignorance (understood biblically as enslavement to sin); how it provides an answer to our selfishness; etc. Reflectively grounded in an orthodox approach to faith, this deft and graceful book will be accessible to serious general readers as well as scholars/professionals.
